Students Are Not File Cabinets! - Stephanie Vicent   12/15/2007

Stephanie Vicenti Stephanie Vicenti is a star of the Gallup Elementary Education program. She has been invited to present her research paper, Students Are Not File Cabinets! Benefits of Project-Based Learning, to the National Association of Bilingual Educators in Tampa Florida in February 2008.
Detailed Description A 4th grade teacher at Dowa Yalanne Elementary in Zuni, Vicenti examined the impact of three different teaching approaches on children’s standardized scores. These included a teacher who used Balridge techniques to help get students’ focused and motivated; a teacher whose approach to teaching is strictly a teacher-centered approach; and Vicenti’s own Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, which organizes learning around student projects, which more closely resemble how Zuni children learn at home. Children in the PBL classes scored significantly higher in reading, math and science than their peers in other classes. She got her master’s in elementary education in large part because of her mother, who is a 2nd grade teacher. When her mother went to her daughter’s graduation for BA, she saw that most of the teachers getting their MAs were older and decided that she too could go back to school and get a MA. Her mother became Vicenti’s role model. Vicenti is interested in getting a Ph.D. next, but lacks the resources to do so. The first university which can find a scholarship will have an alumna who can make a major impact on education in the Southwest. One hopes that UNM moves first. Benefits of Project-Based Learning by Stephanie Vicenti Keshhi, Ho’ Stephanie Vicenti, le’shina. Ho’ dowa:kwe deyan shohkwida:kwe a:wan cha’le. Hello, my name is Stephanie Vicenti and I am of the corn clan and the child of the deer clan. I was raised in Zuni, NM most of my 29 years. I decided to pursue my career at Northern Arizona University in Elementary Education, where I was able to obtain my Bachelor of Science. Upon graduating in 1999, I stayed in Arizona for another two years before returning to my Zuni reservation. Aspiring to teach in my own community, I have been teaching for five years in Zuni. Thanks to my parents and grandmother who has been very supportive of my endeavors and to my son and daughter, Vincent and Kaleia, who have inspired me in furthering my education. These things have all led me to success in my life. Elah:kwa!...read entire article

Zuni Public School LRB Findings and Conclusions fo   12/31/2007

Zuni Public School LRB Findings and Conclusions for the Hearing December 13, 2007 Complainant: Z-FUSE VS.Respondent: Zuni Public School District
Detailed Description Findings and Conclusions: 1. The Zuni LRB has the jurisdiction to hear and render a decision in this matter. 2. In the matter of complaint by ZFUSE regarding a violation of section 10-7E-1 through 10-7E-26 NMSA 1978. We find that the Zuni Public School District gave adequate notice of their intent to change board policies that impacted district employees, including those in the bargaining unit of these changes. 3. We also believe that there are severe issues of miscommunication due to cultural differences and expectations of both management and the bargaining unit specifically regarding the accepted practices in labor negotiations. Recommendations 1. The LRB recognizes that there are significant cultural miscommunication with regard to the accepted protocols in labor negotiations and further recognize that while labor negotiations tend to be adversarial, both parties in this district want the best possible education for the children of Zuni. To this end, we suggest a district appointed representative and a union representative schedule regular meetings. 2. We recognize that all conditions of employment can be negotiated issues, and we commend the union and the district for entering into negotiations and believe that issues brought forth in this complaint can best be resolved at the bargaining table. Commendations We commend the union and the district for moving forward towards the resolution of these and other concerns. Issued in Zuni, New Mexico, Thursday, December 13, 2007 Labor Relations Board: Karen L. White-Chair, Pamela Gough, Stephanie Y. Cox

"Operation Graduation"   4/17/2008

April 17, 2008 at ZHS Cafeteria from 1:30 - 3:30.
Detailed Description Many students feel that after graduation their celebrations must include alcohol, that drinking is a rite of passage. Some parents even condone these celebrations by rationalizing this event. In an effort to provide a tragedy-free graduation season, the Zuni Teen Health Center, the NM State Police, and other tribal programs are joining forces to provide “Operation Graduation” for the class of 2008 at Zuni High School. This event will take place on Thursday, April 17th from 1:30-3:30 pm in the Zuni High School cafeteria. Response to "Editorial" in Gallup Independent   5/7/2008

This is a "positive" response to a "negative" Editorial in the Gallup Independent. PLEASE READ !!!!
Detailed Description Response to -Zuni Schools Need a Positive Change- Dear Zuni Superintendent Peery, I read, yet another, newspaper editorial that made absolutely no sense to me. And the more I think about it, the more I wonder: What have you done to anyone that makes people cringe when they hear the word, "Superintendent"? Here's my two cents: Well first of all, how can students achieve when their teachers, the very teachers that are supposed to be instilling some learning into them, expect very little of them. I've heard teachers left and right complain about how Zuni parents are lethargic and not concerned about their student's achievements -- that Zuni parent's don't understand the value of a good education. Those same teachers then turn to their class and dish out worksheets and handouts in lieu of meaningful classroom activities. As a Zuni parent, I resent what these teachers are saying. And the funny thing is, somehow, YOU get the blame for what teachers are saying. Furthermore, those teachers who belittle Zuni parents, whole- heartedly support the union. Who is the union made up of anyway? Non-Zuni parents only? Yes, today’s kids are headed toward a downhill spiral, but it’s not just a local concern. This is a problem in all communities. Values should be taught at home, first and foremost. Teenage years have been researched and the research has shown that psychologically, these are the years that are tumultuous. It is this time in a person’s life that they are seeking acceptance, and are willing to do whatever it takes to get the acceptance of their peers. So, our schools end up as a testing ground for students. I've read through newspaper editorials, that the District should support values taught at the home. Does that mean it's your job and your job only? Did the word "District" someone change to exclude staff, faculty, and administrators? I'm just curious, because people have been using that word exclusively to mean "you". And here's the funniest part to me. The community says there is no District support. Really? Because I felt tons of support at the District level. Or maybe that’s because I'm one of your loyal supporters. Like the latest editorial said, “you treat me better.” By all means, publish this….send this….email this….print it out and put it on a large poster. I'm sad to say but my community members don't know what's really going on. They would rather believe hear-say because their relative told them so. But, me, I know. I loved working with you to help my students learn. And I'm proud to say that I support you….completely and fully. And in the event that you have made a mistake of some sort, I'd like to say "Welcome to the Human Club." Our motto is "Sometimes it Happens, but we learn to forgive".
